Chanda- A woman with a moonlit smile
After meeting Chanda, the definition of hardship had changed completely for me. This is dismissal reality of inspiring tales that most of the time they reveal or portray hardship, faced by the protagonist only to make the ending more joyous or overwhelming. The story line more often revolve around overcoming hardships and leading life happily after achieving success. However when we move from the world of literature to practical life, the art of living –enjoying small moments during hardship greatly outnumbers the stories of success and happiness aftermath.
Chanda, literally the name signifies-‘ the moon’ symbol of ‘peace and love’. However as Mahadevi Verma, greatly known scholar of Hindi literature described – ‘name of a person is the greatest irony of his/her life’ and this axiom suits the case of Chanda as well. She is a tribal woman of Chhattisgarh and eldest sister of three siblings whose father charged with life imprisonment in a murder case involving land and property issue. Chanda was only a seven years old when all these mishap happened with her family. Despite of her tender age she took the responsibility of her siblings and move ahead to accept the life as it is. As the vegetables availability changes in the market according to seasons she also changes her job depending on the availability of work with the sole purpose of filling the empty belly of her family. In summer and winter she works as a mason labourer and also tries her hand in brick baking and as soon as monsoon arrives she start putting her efforts in growing paddy. With a little to no educational background she never gets choosy when it comes to put labour to earn bread for her family but she never let the childhood of her siblings die in the hands of child labour and always encouraged them to get educated and to fulfil their dreams and hobbies. It is the result of her hard work and sacrifices that today two of her sisters are married and have their families while her youngest sister is a rising singer in Chhattisgarhi folk movies.
Despite of facing uncountable hardship since childhood, her presence is always marked by a beautiful smile greatly signifying her emotional and mental strength. After knowing her life story and analysing it, one can surely say that ‘life become joyful when we accept it as it comes’ and more importantly ‘emotional and mental strength never patentable to a specific gender’.
