Shastri : An epitome of Bravery
Be it the Indo-Pak conflict in 1965, where he led the nation very meticulously, or the time when he lost his father when he was not even 2 years old. Lal ‘Bahadur’ Shastri as his name depicts was indeed the man with a brave heart.
Surely, He never fulfilled the ‘56 inch wide chest’ criteria to be a charismatic leader yet he did wonders through his actions. Yes, It was L.B. Shastri only, who appealed for a one-day fast every week to reduce the demand for food as the nation was facing food scarcity at that time. And guess what, millions of Indians blindly followed his words and skipped their meals. Not just this, but he also supported the green revolution which made the nation self-reliant, and the white revolution which transformed India from a milk deficient nation to the world’s largest producer of milk, surpassing the USA in 1998. If this is not charismatic leadership and that too in just 2 years (his tenure as PM of India) then I do not know what is.
Born on Oct 2, 1904, at Mughalsarai, near Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Lal bahadur SRIVASTAVA, no I have not misspelled, was one of the first students who graduated with a first-class degree in philosophy and ethics from Kashi Vidyapeeth in 1925 and hence was given the ‘Shastri (scholar) title which he adopted and soon dropped his caste derived “Srivastava” title and hence becoming LAL BAHADUR SHASTRI.
Though his inspiring stories are endless I still can not resist myself to tell you that He never told his mother that he was the Minister for Railways ,Govt of India, rather said that he works at railways to ensure that he could discharge his duties with utmost honesty and not anybody, not even his mother could take any sort of advantage of his position. This says so much about this gentleman and today’s glamour and power-driven youth need to learn so much from this man whose style was simple but so impactful that he became the first person to be awarded by BHARAT RATNA, posthumously.
I still remember ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan being nothing less than a war cry for us, during our schooldays parade yet, we can’t thank you enough for your duty, devotion, and contribution to this nation. You will always be remembered.
Jai Hind.
Anjali Singh.
